Free Crochet Pattern: Wrapped With Love Preemie Hat

Charmed By Ewe Wrapped With Love Preemie HatYou can easily tailor this hat for any holiday or occasion just by changing colors. If you would like to make this hat in larger sizes, see this post.

This pattern is written using US crochet terms.

Skill Level: Easy

Size: Preemie

Supplies:  

  • Worsted weight yarn such as Caron Simply Soft in Color A and Color B
  • 5.0 mm (H-8) crochet hook or size needed to obtain the gauge
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends

Gauge in HDC: 15 stitches and 12 rows = 4″ (10 cm)

Abbreviations: ch = chain, sl = slip, st(s) = stitch(es), sc = single crochet, hdc = half double crochet, dc = double crochet, tr = treble crochet

Special Instructions:

  • The hat can be started with a Magic Ring or with the instructions given in Round 1.
  • The beginning chain does not count as a stitch.
  • Each round is started in the same stitch as your beginning chain.
  • The end of each round is joined by slip stitching in the first stitch of the round, not the beginning chain.
  • Instructions for the bow can be found at the end of this post. 

Pattern Instructions

Size: 1 – 2 lbs  •  Head Circumference = 8″ – 10″ •  Hat Circumference = 8″ •  Height hat = 3.65″

Round 1: With Color A – Ch 2, work 9 hdc into the 2nd chain from the hook, join in first hdc (9)
Round 2: Ch 1, make 2 hdc in each stitch around, join (18)
Round 3: Ch 1, *make 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next* repeat around, join (27)
Round 4: Ch 1, *make 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 8 stitches* repeat around, join (30)
Round 5 – 6: Ch 1, hdc around, join (30)
Change to Color B
Round 7 – 8: Ch 1, hdc around, join (30)
Change to Color A
Round 9 – 10: Ch 1, hdc around, join (30)
Round 11: Ch 1, sc around, join (30)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Size: 2 – 3 lbs  •  Head Circumference = 9″ – 11″  •  Hat Circumference = 9″  •  Hat Height = 4″

Round 1: With Color A – Ch 2, work 9 hdc into the 2nd chain from the hook, join in first hdc (9)
Round 2: Ch 1, make 2 hdc in each stitch around, join (18)
Round 3: Ch 1, *make 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next stitch* repeat around, join (27)
Round 4: Ch 1, hdc in first 3 stitches, *make 2 hdc in next stitch, hdc in next 3 stitches* repeat around, join (33)
Round 5 – 7: Ch 1, hdc around, join (33)
Change to Color B
Round 8 – 9: Ch 1, hdc around, join (33)
Change to Color A
Round 10 – 11: Ch 1, hdc around, join (33)
Round 12: Ch 1, sc around, join (33)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Size: 4 – 5 lbs  •  Head Circumference = 10″ – 12″  •  Hat Circumference = 9.75″  •  Hat Height = 4.5″

Round 1: With Color A – Ch 2, work 9 hdc into the 2nd chain from the hook, join in first hdc (9)
Round 2: Ch 1, make 2 hdc in each stitch around, join (18)
Round 3: Ch 1, *make 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next stitch* repeat around, join (27)
Round 4: Ch 1, *make 2 hdc in first stitch, hdc in next 2 stitches* repeat around, join (36)
Round 5 – 8: Ch 1, hdc around, join (36)
Change to Color B
Round 9 – 10: Ch 1, hdc around, join (36)
Change to Color A
Round 11 – 13: Ch 1, hdc around, join (36)
Round 14: Ch 1, sc around, join (36)
Fasten off and weave in all ends.

Bow

With Color B
Round 1: Ch 3, into 1st chain make *1 dc, 3 tr, 1 dc, ch 2, sl st in same ch*, ch 2, repeat between *, fasten off
Fasten off leaving a long tail. Use the tail to wrap the center of the bow a few times. Secure the ends and use the longer tail to sew the bow onto the hat. I used used it to secure each end of the bow so it doesn’t curl up.
